Guatemala City- Representing the United States at 96 kg (211.5 pounds), Missouri redshirt freshman wrestler Max Askren (Hartland, Wis.) finished eighth at the Federation Internationnal des Luttes Associees (FILA) Freestyle Junior World Championships in Guatemala City last Saturday.
Competing in a group that contained 15 of the world's best wrestlers, Askren first paired with United Arab Emirate grappler Faisal Al Kutbi, winning two bouts (2-0, 5-3). Next up, Askren battled against 2005, 96 kg freestyle runner-up Riza Yildrim of Turkey, but suffered back-to-back losses (0-1 and 2-8) to fall out of medal contention. Yildrim went on to take the bronze medal in the freestyle event.
Russian Federation wrestler Alan Lokhov claimed the 96 kg freestyle title.
Askren will rejoin his Missouri teammates in the following weeks and is expected to wrestle for the Tigers at 197 pounds this season.
