Columbia, Mo. - Missouri sophomore wrestler and 2006 All-American Tyler McCormick, (Leawood, Kan.) was named to the University Division men's at-large ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America third team as announced today. The honor is a first for McCormick and marks the first time in two years that a Tiger wrestler garnered ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America recognition.
After being named the youngest University Division men's at-large ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District 7 team honoree nearly two weeks ago, McCormick's name was reentered for voting on Academic All-America honors as decided by Sports Information Directors from across the nation.
McCormick becomes Missouri's first ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American since Kenny Burleson was selected for the third team in 2004. Altogether, five Missouri wrestlers dating back to 1988 have earned first, second or third team accolades.
Of the 45 student-athletes divided between the first, second and third team, only four individuals hailed from Big 12 schools and six were wrestlers, McCormick representing both.
McCormick finished seventh at 133 pounds in this year's NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships March 16-18 in Oklahoma City, Okla. It marked McCormick first appearance at the National tournament and he became Missouri's 25th wrestling All-American after defeating Matt Keller of UTC, 6-4. The Tiger grappler closed his sophomore campaign with a 31-9 record.
