LUBBOCK, Texas-- - Texas Tech scored a run in the bottom of the eighth inning to break a 2-2 tie and held on for the 3-2 win, taking a sweep of the three-game series with Mizzou. It was the second-straight day in which the Tigers have fallen one run short of TTU.
The Red Raiders' Roger Kieschnick crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly by Kyle Martin in the eighth inning to score what would be the game-winning run.
Texas Tech (31-20-1, 9-13-1 Big 12) got three-consecutive two-out singles in the bottom of the third, plating the game's first run. Matt Smith had the final hit of the third inning, driving in Brian Capps. The Red Raiders scored their second run of the game in the fifth inning when a Mizzou error allowed Willie Rueda to score from second on a base hit by Capps.
Senior J.C. Field put Missouri (25-24, 9-15 Big 12) on the board with a solo home run, his second homer of the season, in the sixth inning. It was just the second hit of the game for the Tigers and cut the Tech lead to one. MU tied the score later in the inning as sophomore Evan Frey scored all the way from first base on a two-out single by freshman Ryan Lollis.
Freshman Rick Zagone recorded the longest outing of his career for Missouri, pitching seven innings, allowing three runs and striking out five. His previous long outing was six innings against Oklahoma State on April 23.
Mizzou will open the final week of the regular season against Illinois at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday at T.R. Hughes Ballpark in O'Fallon, Mo. Next weekend, the Tigers close out the regular season with a three-game series with Texas at Taylor Stadium, opening at 6:30 p.m. on Friday.
