Columbia, Mo. - Ben Askren (Hartland, Wis.) was named the Collegiate Wrestler of the Year by SI On Campus, adding another honor to his list of accomplishments for the 2005-06 season. Missouri's starter at 174 pounds, Askren recorded the Tiger's first individual national wrestling title at the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships, March 18.
Askren beat undefeated No. 2 Jake Herbert of Northwester by major decision, 14-2, in the 174-pound final to win the title. Askren's performance, the only match among the finals to be decided by more than seven points, earned recognition from the coaches as the tournament's Most Outstanding Wrestler.
