COLUMBIA, Mo. - - Mizzou Baseball defeated Kansas State 6-3 on Sunday in the final game of a three-game series at Taylor Stadium to claim the series victory. The Tigers scored five of their six runs in the first two innings on their way to the win.
After Kansas State (17-3, 1-2 Big 12) put a run on the board in the top of the first inning, MU answered with a three-run bottom of the first, as three Tigers- sophomore Evan Frey, senior Zane Taylor and junior Hunter Mense- all drew walks in the inning and all three scored. The final run in the inning, scored by Mense, came on a two-out triple by senior Trevor Helms.
Senior J.C. Field and junior Gary Arndt led off the second inning with back-to-back doubles. Field scored on Arndt's double and later in the inning, Arndt would cross the plate.
The Tigers (15-8, 5-1) added a run in the sixth as Taylor doubled, moved to third on a single by sophomore Brock Bond and scored on a sacrifice fly by Priday. Priday had three RBI without recording a hit on the day. Taylor was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and Arndt had two hits, drove in one and scored once.
Frey was 1-for-3, extending his hitting streak to 11 games.
Freshman David Cales picked up his second win of the season, moving to 2-0, as he pitched 3.2 innings in relief of freshman Rick Zagone. Cales struck out five and walked none, while allowing just one hit to the Wildcats. Senior Taylor Parker recorded his second save in as many days and his fifth of the season.
Next up, Missouri will take on Southeast Missouri State at 6 p.m. on Wednesday in Cape Girardeau, Mo. before traveling to Lawrence, Kan. for a three-game series with Kansas next weekend.
