Columbia, Mo.- Missouri wrestling Head Coach Brian Smith announced the members of the Black and Gold teams today for Sunday's, Nov. 5, 2 p.m. (CT) competition in the Hearnes Center. The single mat layout will feature 12 bouts with Bart Horton and Chris McCormick leading the Black team, while Pat McNamara and Tyron Woodley coach the Gold team.
"The Black and Gold wrestle-off's are always a good test to see where our wrestlers stand prior to the first meet of the season," Head Coach Brian Smith said. "This year we're making it more of a black versus gold setup so that we'll have one clear team champion. It should be an exciting preseason event for our fans to come out and watch."
This year's Black team features three NCAA qualifiers in Michael Chandler (157 pounds, High Ridge, Mo.), 2005 All-American Matt Pell (165-pounds, Luxemburg, Wis.) and 2006 National Champion Ben Askren (174-pounds, Hartland, Wis.). Also included on the Black team are newcomers Ashtin Primus (South Connelsville, Penn.) fresh off of a 141-pound Lindenwood Open title and eighth place FILA Junior World Championships finisher Max Askren (Hartland, Wis.).
Eight members of the Gold team have prior starting experience in Missouri's lineup. Junior co-captain and 2006 All-American Tyler McCormick (Leawood, Kan.) is set to wrestle at 133-pounds with NCAA qualifier Raymond Jordan (New Bern, N.C.) taking on Max Askren in the 184/197-pound challenge.
Two weight classes (141 and 149 pounds) will be contested in a round-robin format.
