Missouri Wrestler Claims Lindenwood Open Title

St. Charles, Mo.- Freshman Missouri wrestler Ashtin Primus (South Connelsville, Penn.) claimed the 141 pound title at the Lindenwood Open Friday, Oct. 27, in St. Charles, Mo. One of seven Tigers competing in the open tournament, Primus pinned Missouri teammate Vince Hannon (Plainfield, Ill.) in 1:06 to earn his first collegiate title.
Wrestling unattached, Primus opened the day with back-to-back byes before taking on Matt Hemery of Purdue. Primus pinned Hemery in 1:14, advancing to a match against Lindenwood's Marcus Cobbs. A 10-2 major decision triumph over Heremy sent Primus into head-to-head competition with Hannon where he came out on top with his second pin of the day. Competing on the other side of the bracket, Hannon opened with a bye then recorded a technical fall over Edgar Haynes of Missouri Baptist, 21-4. Up next, Hannon held off Missouri Valley College wrestler Jon Gerhold, 1-0, and Chad Coon (Lindenwood), 10-4, to advance to the championship bout.
Luke Cherep (Naperville, Ill.), was 1-2 on the day at 133-pounds, pinning his first opponent, Clayton Wise of Missouri Baptist, in 2:56. Competing at 149-pounds, Zach Schuller (St. Clairsville, Ohio) went 2-2 earning both a major decision (20-9, Corey Bleaken, Cumberland University) and decision (7-5, Nathaniel Troupe, Missouri Baptist). Newcomer Kevin Ecker (Kansas City, Mo.) made his way through the 157-pound bracket with a 3-2 record highlighted by a pin of Cumberland's Mike Newberg in 1:43. Junior Vince Demarest (Leavenworth County, Kan.) and freshman Josh Skurnik (Kirkland, Wash.) both went 1-1 at 174-pounds.
The third-ranked Tiger wrestling team will host the annual Black and Gold wrestle-off's Sunday, Nov. 5 at 2 p.m. (CT) in the Hearnes Center.
