AUSTIN, Texas. - Despite a strong second half effort, the Missouri soccer team gave up a goal late in the first half as the squad fell to No. 14 Texas 1-0 Friday night in Austin, Texas. The Tigers (9-8 overall, 1-7 Big 12) held their own against the Longhorns (13-3-1 overall, 6-1-1 Big 12) despite getting outshot 22-5 in the contest.
With ten minutes elapsed in the match, Texas' Kelsey Carpenter unleashed a shot from the right corner of the box that seemed to waver in the air. Sophomore goalie Mallory Forst knocked the shot down and the Tiger defense cleared the loose ball before the Longhorns could take another shot.
The Tiger defense played solid for the first 40 minutes of the match but Texas capitalized on an uncleared corner in the 41st minute to take a 1-0 lead. Neither team could get a foot on Stephanie Logterman's corner kick until Carrie Schmit tapped a ball that dribbled past Forst and into the far post.
Missouri looked to get its offense on track in the second half and had an opportunity when senior Meggie Malm intercepted a ball just before half field. Malm raced down the right sideline and tried to thread a pass up to freshman Breanna Thornton and Andrighetto but Thornton was whistled offsides to thwart the scoring chance.
In the 60th minute, sophomore Lindsay McCoy took a deep free kick for Mizzou for the Tigers' best scoring opportunity of the night. Sophomore Kat Tarr managed to send a six-yard header on net but the shot went right to Longhorn keeper Dianna Pfenninger.
Six minutes later, redshirt freshman Meghan Pfeiffer sailed a 45-yard pass into the box but Pfenninger came off her line to collect the ball just before freshman Michelle Collins could reach it.
Texas nearly upped its lead to 2-0 in the 77th minute but Priscilla Fite's 22-yard blast clanged off the post and bounced harmlessly out of bounds. Fite launched another strong shot four minutes later but Forst punched the ball over the crossbar for a Longhorn corner.
With less than seven minutes left in regulation, Thornton raced down a pass from senior Elyse Nikonchuk and sent a dangerous ball into the box just before falling out of bounds. Freshman Crystal Wagner sprinted to get to the loose ball but Pfenninger came way off her line to reach the ball just before Wagner.
Andrighetto was fouled in the 85th minute to earn the Tigers a free kick five yards from the box but the 15-yard header by Pfeiffer off McCoy's free kick flew just high of the goal.
Forst made a career-high nine saves in the match.
The Tigers continue their trip through Texas with a 12 p.m. game against No. 8 Texas A&M on Sunday, Oct. 22. Mizzou then closes out the regular season with a road game against Iowa State in Ames, Iowa on Friday,
