Columbia, Mo. - Competing in the Hearnes Center, the No. 9 Missouri wrestling squad rode three pins to a 38-6 triumph over Eastern Illinois, preserving Head Coach Brian Smith's undefeated record against the Panthers in his time at the helm of the Tigers. The victory makes Smith 7-0 against Eastern Illinois.
After Eastern Illinois forfeited the opening match at 125 pounds to give the Tigers a 6-0 advantage, sophomore Tyler McCormick (Leawood, Kan.) wasted no time in doubling Missouri's point total. Taking down Tony Metzger 40 seconds into the match, No. 14 McCormick never gave his opponent a chance to even the score, pinning his opponent 37 seconds later to increase the Tiger advantage to 12-0.
A scrambler whose matches are known for ending before the full seven minutes has been wrestled, sophomore Josh Wagner (Milton, Wis.) faced off against Eastern Illinois Jeff Tharp at 149 pounds, taking only a half a minute longer than McCormick to record the pin. The fall was Wagner's ninth of the campaign, the second-highest total on the team.
Ranked No. 4 in the nation at 165 pounds, junior Matt Pell (Luxemburg, Wis.) wasted no time in dispatching of Andy Mangiaguerra in just 30 seconds. The start of a one-two-three combination that hasn't lost in dual action this season, Pell's performance was quickly followed by a technical fall from junior Ben Askren (Hartland, Wis.) and a 5-0 decision by redshirt freshman Raymond Jordan (New Bern, N.C.) at 184 pounds.
Two Tigers picked up wins in their first career starts to round out the scoring for Missouri. Coming off of a strong performance at the Southern Scuffle, redshirt freshman Marcus Hoehn (Farmington, Mo.) squared off against Chase Beebe, riding a three-point second period to a 6-2 victory. Two matches later redshirt freshman Andrew Sherry (Sewickley, Penn.) picked up a 10-3 decision over Chris Smith in his first action back after an injury at the Missouri Open Nov. 20.
