SACRAMENTO, Calif.--The University of Missouri began competition at the 2006 NCAA Track & Field Championships on Wednesday at Sacramento State. Tiger senior Hans Uldal stands 10th after day one of the men's decathlon.
Uldal stands tenth in the men's decathlon after five of ten events with a score of 3,750 points, 14 more than his day one score from last year's NCAA Championships where he finished third. Uldal ran a 11.48 in the 100-meter dash into a headwind, leapt to 23 feet, 7½ inches (7.20m) in the long jump, marked a 46-7¼ (14.20m) throw in the shot put, cleared 5-10¾ (1.80m) in the high jump, and clocked a 51.13 in the 400-meter dash.
Junior Bjorn Sommerfeldt fouled three jumps in the long jump and scored 2,485 points on day one.
Sophomore Jason Morris (St. Louis, Mo.) placed 15th in the men's hammer throw with a throw of 204-7 (62.35m). Sophomore Chris Rohr placed 18th with a 202-5 (61.70m) mark. Junior Bobby Musil finished 19th at 201-9 (61.50m). The top 12 advanced to Friday's final.
Senior Ashley Patten ran a 2:08.40 in the first-round of the women's 800-meter run, placing 26th overall. Junior Marcus Mayes ran a 1:48.86 in the men's 800 prelim to take 17th overall. Patten and Mayes will not advance to Thursday's semifinal round.
Missouri will continue competition tomorrow at 10 a.m., pacific. Uldal and Sommerfeldt will wrap up the men's decathlon, Bill Hobson and Nate Englin will compete in the men's shot put qualifying round, Amanda Bales will compete in the first-round of the women's 1500-meter run, and Serena Ramsey will compete in the final of the women's 10,000-meters.
