COLUMBIA, Mo. -- - University of Missouri Head Basketball Coach Quin Snyder has named Lance Irvin to the Tigers' staff as an assistant coach, it was announced Thursday. Irvin, who has previously coached in the Big 12 Conference with Texas A&M and Iowa State, brings 12 years of coaching experience to the Tigers.
"Lance is a high-character individual with a wealth of coaching experience," Snyder said. "His strong familiarity with our league and his recruiting ties in this region of the country will be a valuable addition to our program. Lance's infectious energy on the court will enhance our staff's presence and will be an asset to our players."
Irvin was an assistant coach at Texas A&M during the 2003-04 season under current Missouri Associate Head Coach Melvin Watkins, who was the Aggies' Head Coach at that time. Prior his stint in College Station, Irvin was an assistant coach at Illinois State for one season after spending one year as an assistant at Iowa State in 2001-02. At ISU, he helped the Cyclones land a recruiting class that was ranked in the top five nationally.
"I am thrilled at the opportunity to join the staff at the Missouri," Irvin said. "I have always had a strong degree of admiration for the program and the University. Aside from the success that Mizzou has had on the court and in postseason play, I am excited to work for someone like Coach Snyder who values education and developing young people in the classroom."
Irvin started his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Idaho in 1991-92. He was an assistant on Joey Meyer's staff at DePaul from 1992-97, helping the Blue Demons to NIT appearances in 1994 and 1995. He took a year off from collegiate basketball during the 1997-98 season, assisting at Chicago's Carver High School. He then joined the staff of Loyola-Chicago as an assistant from 1998-01 before moving to Iowa State.
He was an all-city, all-area and all-state selection and an honorable mention All-American as a senior at Chicago's Julian High School in 1987. He has spent the last year working for the Chicago Board of Education.
Irvin, a native of Chicago, and his wife, Paula, are parents of one daughter, Brooklyn.
