WINDSOR, Ontario, Canada - University of Missouri's Nate Englin completed a tremendous freshman season as a Tiger Track & Field athlete on Friday by winning the Silver medal at the Pan-American Junior Games in Windsor, Canada. Englin was part of a 1-2 American sweep of the men's shot put in a Pan-Am Games that pits the best athletes from North and South America under 20-years-old in the three-day meeting.
Englin's (Shoreview, Minn.) best throw of 64 feet, 4 inches (19.61m) ranks as the third-best in the World in 2005 with the junior implement of 13.2 pounds. Fellow American Ryan Whiting, an incoming freshman for Arizona State, won the Gold with a heave of 64-9¾ (19.75m).
"It felt great to do what Ryan and I did," said Englin. "It's all about keeping with that American shot putting tradition that we were able to uphold here. I was a little nervous until I took my first two practice throws and then it started to come to me. My first throw wasn't the best, but I seemed to improve in every other throw. It was a great atmosphere, a lot of people in the stands and a great facility, just an amazing feeling."
Englin capped a spectacular start to his Tiger career. Before grabbing Silver at both the Pan-Am Juniors and USATF Junior Championships, Englin grabbed All-Big 12 status at both the indoor and outdoor conference championships. At the NCAA Regionals, Englin was part of a national-high four shot-putter contingent from Missouri and placed a surprising ninth, coming inches from the at-large selection pool for the NCAA Championships.
