
Max Scherzer Named All-American by Collegiate Baseball

Missouri sophomore right-hander Max Scherzer has been named to Collegiate Baseball Newspaper's All-America Second Team after a going 9-4 this season and setting a new school record with 131 strikeouts, which leads the Big 12 Conference and is fifth best in the nation.
Scherzer also led the Big 12 with a .163 opponent's batting average and finished the season with a 1.82 ERA. He had a complete-game victory at No. 5 Nebraska on May 6 and pitched the first seven innings of a combined no-hitter against then-No. 25 Texas Tech on April 1. He struck out a career-high 14 in the no-hitter.
He was named the Big 12 Conference Pitcher of the Year and twice earned the Big 12 Pitcher of the Week honor. Scherzer was selected the National Collegiate Baseball Writers' Association National Pitcher of the Week, along with a Collegiate Baseball Newspaper's National Player of the Week on April 4, following the no-hit performance.
Scherzer has been invited to the 2005 USA Baseball National Team Trials in June. He has also been named to the watch list for the Xanthus Dick Howser Award, the Golden Spikes Award, the Clemens Award and the Wallace Award.
Mizzou finished the 2005 season with a 40-23 record, recording 40 wins for the first time since 1991. The Tigers made a third-consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in school history, going 1-2 in the Fullerton (Calif.) Regional last weekend.
