Columbia, Mo. - The University of Missouri Women's Golf squad shot the fourth best team round of the second day on Wednesday with a 300 to move into 15th place at the NCAA Women's Golf Championships after finishing in a tie for 20th after yesterday's opening round. The Tigers are only four strokes out of the top 10 and 11 strokes out of the top five in their first appearance in school history at the NCAA Championships. The tourney is being played at the par-71, 6,312-yard Meadows Course at the Sunriver Resort with Pepperdine and Auburn tied for the lead at 586 after the first two round.
Mizzou closed the day on a tear led by sophomore Kelli Strubinger and freshman Madde Augustsson who both recorded two birdies in their final five holes, respectively. Head Coach Stephanie Cooper said that the Tigers' play toward the end of the second round was a tribute to their outstanding focus after another day or rain and cool temperatures.
"I was really pleased with the way we finished the round today and kept our mental edge throughout the round," Cooper said. "We were able to knock down some birdie putts and make a move toward the top 10. There is still a lot of golf to be played and hopefully we can carry the momentum we established late in the round today."
After carding an opening round 77 on Tuesday, freshman Madde Augustsson had a great day on Wednesday with a three-over par 74 to move into a tie for 46th with a total of 151. Augustsson had three birdies on the day and her round of 74 equals the second best round of her young career. Senior Mindy Bullard was also her usual consistent self in the second round shooting a 75 to move into a tie for 53rd with a total of 152. Juniors Denise Knaebel and Kelli Strubinger, who are both in a tie for 64th, also improved on their opening round efforts as Knaebel fired a 75 after a 78 on Tuesday and Strubinger filed a 76 after a 77 in the first round. Senior Maria Ohlsson had a tough second round with a 79 to drop into a tie for 78th with a total of 155.
The Tigers open play in tomorrow's second round at 10:00 am (12:00 am CST) and will play with teams from Washington and Michigan State. Live scoring and a complete recap will be made available tomorrow at www.mutigers.com via www.golfstat.com.
