Columbia, Mo.-- The #55 Missouri tennis team dropped two matches over the weekend to Oklahoma State and Oklahoma losing both matches 4-3. The losses drop the Tigers to 14-7 on the season and to 4-6 in league play.
In both matches the Tigers lost the doubles point and entered singles competition needing four matches to pull out a team victory. Missouri was able to rally to take a lead in the Oklahoma State match with wins by No. 1 Katka Sevcikova, along with No. 6 Carolyn Kramer and No. 2 Yelena Olshanskaya. The Tiger lead proved short-lived however as Lauren Simmons clinched the match for the Cowgirls with a 6-3, 7-6, win over Hana Kraftova at No. 3 singles.
The Oklahoma match was just as close seeing Missouri split with the Sooners in singles play. Sevcikova, Kramer and No. 4 Lubica Nadasska each picked up victories for the Tigers. Deciding the match, sophomore Erika Josbena battled with Christi Baxley at the No. 5 spot pushing the match to a third set before falling 3-6, 6-2, 6-1 giving the Sooners the team victory.
"These matches were about as close as we could have played," Head Coach Blake Starkey said. "We had some of our freshmen play like freshmen this weekend and we need a total team effort if we want to win matches."
Missouri return to the court on Sat., April 23 for its season finale against #11 Texas. Seniors Mary Barry, Katka Sevcikova and Carolyn Kramer will be honored.
