#72 Mizzou Falls to #52 Nebraska

Lincoln, Neb.-The #72 Missouri Tiger tennis team played a tough battle, but were unable to rally past #52 Nebraska, falling to the Cornhuskers 6-1. Despite harrowing efforts, the Tigers felt the absence of two of their top players, as Mary Barry and Hana Kraftova were both sidelined due to injury. The loss brings Missouri to 4-2 on the season and 0-1 in Big 12 Conference play.
Nebraska jumped out to an early lead taking doubles points winning both the No. 1 and No. 2 matches. In singles competition, Nebraska continued to roll winning five of the six matches played. Despite Missouri efforts sending four of the competitions to three-sets, the Tigers were unable to make a comeback.
Highlighting the meet was play by Mizzou's Katka Sevcikova. Ranked #120 and playing at No. 1 singles, Sevcikova pulled out an incredible upset victory over Nebraska's #19 Gitte Ostermann. Despite losing the first set 6-2, the senior stormed back to win the next two sets and claim the match 2-6, 6-1, 6-3.
"While we did lose the match, the score is a bit deceiving" Missouri Head Coach Blake Starkey said. "We were in every match and could have won if some of the matches that went three-sets had gone our way. Now we're going to go home and prepare for our upcoming matches with Murray State and Iowa State. "
Missouri returns home next weekend for the first of a seven-match home stand. The Tigers square off against Murray State on Fri., Feb. 18 at 6:00 p.m., and end the weekend facing Iowa State on Sun., Feb. 20 at 11:00 a.m. All Mizzou tennis matches are played in the Green Tennis Center and are open to the public.
