Las Vegas - One of 50 schools competing in the annual Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational, the No. 16 Missouri wrestling program finished day one of the two-day tournament in third place with 68 points in the Cashman Center. Defending 2004 Champions Michigan (No. 3) lead the field with 86 points followed by Cornell (No. 9) with 72.5. Two members of Missouri's 10-man squad remain in the championship bracket of their respective weight class with five staying alive in consolation rounds.
Junior Ben Askren (Hartland, Wis.) finished the day 4-0 at 174 pounds, tying 2004 graduate J.P. Reese's MU career falls record (47) in his opening match and setting a new record in his second and fourth bouts. Taking on Buffalo's Ray Lamb, Askren pinned the junior in 2:30 and followed with a fall over Nick Padaan (Pittsburgh) in 2:12. In his third match of the day, Askren managed a 19-1 technical fall over Mike Gorgan of UVA in 4:36. Through two periods of action, Askren turned Gorgan for a total of nine back points taking him down an additional four times while racking up 1:52 of riding time. Askren closed out the night with his 49th career pin, dropping Jeremy Larson in 2:56.
Wrestling at 165 pounds junior Matt Pell (Luxemburg, Wis.) improved on last year's Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational outing going 3-0 on the day while earning two major decision victories and a technical fall. Both Askren and Pell will continue through tomorrow's championship bracket, with Askren looking to defend his 2004 174-pound title.
Seniors Austin DeVoe (Columbus, Kan., 125 pounds), Chris McCormick (Leawood, Kan., 141 pounds) and Jeff Foust (Blue Springs, Mo., 197 pounds) along with redshirt freshman Raymond Jordan (New Bern, N.C., 184 pounds) and freshman Sean Connole (Erie, Penn., HWT) all took one hit on the day to drop to the consolation brackets but will fight for third place finishes beginning at 9 a.m. (PST) Saturday morning.
Four Tigers combined for seven falls on the day, with Askren tallying three and DeVoe two. Missouri's fastest pin was clocked by Askren in 2:12 over Padaan.
Day two of the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational will begin tomorrow morning at 9 a.m. (PST) with round five and six semi-finals. Championship finals are slated for a 5 p.m. (PST) start.
Notes: Seven of Missouri's 10 wrestlers competing in the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational entered their first matches of the day seeded. Askren held the highest seed at No. 1 (174 pounds). Pell entered as the No. 2 seed at 165 pounds.
Askren tied the Missouri career falls record (47) set by 141-pounder J.P. Reese in 2004 after sticking Ray Lamb of Buffalo in 2:30.
