Columbia, Mo. -
University of Missouri true freshman tight end Chase Coffman (Peculiar, Mo.) was named a 1st-Team Freshman All-American by Rivals.com, as announced today by Rivals.
Coffman played in all 11 regular-season games for Mizzou in 2005, and hauled in 39 catches for 404 yards - both MU freshman tight end records - and three touchdowns. His reception and yardage totals are third-best on the team, and his touchdown total is second-most on the squad.
Coffman has the second-most catches this season among all Big 12 tight ends - trailing only teammate Martin Rucker (42), and his reception total ranks 16th currently among all Big 12 receivers in 2005. In just his first year in college, Coffman has already put up one of the most prolific seasons for a tight end in school history. Heading into Mizzou's upcoming bowl game, Coffman ranks third on the MU single-season receptions list for tight ends, and also ranks seventh on the school's single-season yardage list for tight ends.
Coffman closed the 2005 regular season in fine fashion, as he had six catches for a career-high 88 yards and one touchdown at Kansas State - playing at the same stadium where his father, Paul Coffman, starred as a tight end for the Wildcats from 1975-77. He also caught six passes in games against New Mexico and Colorado, and had touchdowns against Arkansas State and New Mexico.
