Mizzou Golfers Open Up Play in Match Play Championships

HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. - - The Mizzou Men's and Women's golf teams both opened up play in the 2005 Hooters Collegiate Match Play Championships on Friday in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla. The Tiger men were eliminated from the tournament after dropping two matches on the opening day, while the women fell in their opening match, but lead when play was suspended in round two.
After being swept in the first round by the No. 3 ranked team in the nation, Georgia Tech, the Mizzou men's team fell to New Mexico by a score of 3-2 in the consolation bracket. Juniors Shawn Jasper and Chris Mabry recorded the two wins for the Tigers against New Mexico. Jasper defeated Robb Bierbaum 2&1 and Mabry took the win over Mark Anderson, 5&4.
On the women's side, junior Stephanie Wavro picked up Missouri's lone point in the morning match against ninth-ranked Arizona State, as she defeated Lindsay Anderson 2&1.
The MU women had more success in their second match of the day which was suspended. The Tigers have one victory and lead in two of the four remaining matches that will be completed on Saturday morning. Senior Kelli Strubinger defeated Kasi Lee, 7&6 and Wavro and freshman Chelsea Schriewer each hold leads through 14 holes.
