Columbia, Mo. -Ranked 12th in the nation, the Missouri wrestling team improved to 7-0 on the season, earning wins over Utah Valley State (48-0), Southern Illinois-Edwardsville (55-0) and Maryland (47-0) in the first annual Missouri Duals held this afternoon in the Hearnes Center. The Tigers closed down all three of the day's opponents, scoring the program's second highest shutout with a 55-0 total over Southern Illinois-Edwardsville.
"I always expect this team to wrestle well," Head Coach Brian Smith said. "Today they went out and got the job done by winning every single match. Naturally, there are still little areas that we can go back and work on, but overall I'm really pleased with the way our team performed today."
Scoring three wins on the day, senior co-captain Tyron Woodley (165) improved to 93-34 on his career, moving to within seven victories of joining the Tigers' 100-win club. Woodley opened the afternoon with an 11-1 major decision over Tanner Cowan (Utah Valley State) and followed with a pin on Southern Illinois-Edwardsville's John Ficht in 2:40. The fall was Woodley's second of the season. Closing out his day against Terrapin wrestler Jason Kiessling, Woodley totaled 14 points through six takedowns, one escape and 1:22 of riding time. Kiessling was only able to manage four points against the stronger and more aggressive Woodley.
Adding two more victories to his win streak, redshirt freshman Ben Askren (174) remains the Tigers' only unbeaten starter with an untarnished 17-0 record. The 2004 All-American proved dominant on the mat, notching two more wins by fall, the first coming over Darin Harris (Utah Valley State) early in the first period (1:31), with the second coming against Luke Stauffer (Maryland) in 1:37. Askren has recorded 12 falls on the season and is seven pins away from setting a new Missouri season falls record. Currently, the MU season falls record is held by 2003 heavyweight Kevin Herron (18). Throughout his two year career, Askren has accumulated 29 pins, and is only seven falls shy of etching his name among the top three on the MU career falls chart. (Rick Romeo stands third with 36 falls to his name, 1977-82).
Redshirt freshman Tyler McCormick (133) was one of four Missouri wrestlers to compete in all three duals on the day. McCormick recorded back-to-back falls, the first coming in 6:11 against Utah Valley State Wolverine Matt Ripplinger and the second in 4:17 over Steve Chico of SIUE. Pairing with Sean Carr of Maryland for his final bout of the afternoon, McCormick jumped to an early lead in the first period with a takedown and sealed his win through three consecutive three-point nearfalls. In the end, McCormick walked away the winner with a technical fall in 5:12.
Missouri racked up 12 falls throughout three duals and added even more bonus points through a series of five technical falls and eight major decisions. In the Tiger's middle match at 3 p.m. (CT), the 2004-05 Missouri wrestling team made history by moving to second on the dual shutout record with a 55-0 win over Southern Illinois-Edwardsville. The Tigers came within two points of setting an all new dual shutout record, currently held by the 1980-81 MU wrestling team and their 56-0 win over Shippensburg State.
The Tigers will return to action against in-state rival Central Missouri State, Thursday, Jan. 6, at 7 p.m., in the Hearnes Center.
