BERKELEY, Calif.-- - Playing against its second ranked team in as many games this season, Mizzou played No. 17 California to a scoreless tie to close out the opening weekend of the 2005 season. Missouri is 0-1-1 on the season.
The two teams played to a scoreless tie in the first period, matching each other in goals with six and shots on goal with two each. Mizzou played aggressively and was on the attack from the start of the game. Although the Tigers had just two shots on goal in the first half, they produced several scoring opportunities, but was unable to get a shot into the net.
The Tigers remained on the attack as early in the second half, senior Amber Swinehart narrowly missed a goal. Swinehart, one-on-one with a Cal defender, drove in and sent a shot toward the goal, which hitting the crossbar. At the end of regulation, the Bears held the advantage in shots 13-10, but Missouri sophomore goalkeeper Laura Buehrig and the Tiger defenders kept the Cal shots out of the net.
Eight minutes into the first overtime, California appeared to have scored the game-winning goal, but was called for offsides, negating the goal and keeping the game scoreless which would be the final outcome.
The shutout was the third career shutout for Buehrig.
Missouri will open up its home schedule next weekend with the Big 12/Big Ten Challenge. MU will host Indiana at 7 p.m. on Friday at Walton Stadium, before taking on Purdue at 2 p.m. on Sunday at Walton Stadium.
Next weekend's action will be broadcast live on www.mutigers.com as part of the new Mizzou All-Access. All of the Tigers' home games this season will be broadcast and next weekend's games will be shown at no charge to celebrate the kickoff the new service.
