Tiger Men Go 4-For-4 at State Amateur

June 23, 2005

COLUMBIA, Mo. - All four members of the Missouri men's golf team won their first-round matches Thursday at the 2005 Missouri State Amateur, being held this week at Millwood Golf & Racquet Club in Ozark, Mo.

Sophomore John Kelly (St. Louis, Mo. / Christian Brothers College HS) posted what was arguably the upset of the day with a 2-and-1 win over St. Louis' Skip Berkmeyer, who is the 1999 State Amateur champion. Berkmeyer entered the match-play portion of the tournament as the No. 8 seed. Kelly will face Columbia's D.J. Chung, a 1-up winner over Scott Schleiffarth, in Friday morning's second round.

Sophomore Shawn Jasper (Marthasville, Mo. / Francis Howell HS / Newman Univ.), who entered match play as the No. 3 seed, lived up to expectations by notching the most lopsided win of the 32 matches Thursday. His 8-and-7 win over Matt Barnier of Rogersville sets up a second-round matchup with Mike Lueders of St. Louis.

Freshman Kyle Marcolla (Chillicothe, Mo. / Chillicothe HS), the reigning Missouri Junior Amateur Champion, defeated Mike Dallmeyer of Jefferson City, 5-and-4. He will play Springfield's Travis Mitchell in the second round.

Ninth-seed Chris Mabry (Leawood, Kan. / Bishop Miege HS), who just completed his junior year at MU, posted a 3-and-2 win over Jay McBride of Lebanon, and will face Gallatin's Brice Garnett in the second round.

The 16 winners Friday morning will meet in the third round later Friday afternoon, with 18-hole quarterfinals and semifinals on Saturday to set up the 36-hole final on Sunday.
