South Bend, IN - The University of Missouri Men's Golf squad continued its red-hot play at the NCAA Central Regional on Saturday as they fired a 293 and remained in third place with a two-round total of 578. The tourney is being played at the par-70, 7,011-yard Warren Golf Course in South Bend, IN.
Mizzou is making its second appearance in Regional play since 1995 and is in contention for its first NCAA Championship appearance since 1986. The top 10 teams from each of the three Regionals will move on to the NCAA Championships which will be played on June 1-4 in Baltimore, MD.
"We played solid today and we need to maintain that consistency in tomorrow's final round and finish strong," first-year Head Coach Mark Leroux said. "I told our kids that they are a good golf team, but if they want to be great, they should repeatedly be playing themselves into the final pairing like we were able to do today."
Tiger junior Ben Scott was definitely the story of the day for Mizzou as he fired a three-under par 67 in the second round to move into a tie for second at two-under par (138) for the tournament heading into tomorrow's final round. Scott was one of three Tigers to be within one shot of par during yesterday's opening round and fired the third best round of the tournament so far behind tourney leader Pablo Martin (OSU) who shot five-under par in yesterday's opening round and Wichita State's Judd Easterling who shot a four-under 66 today.
Sophomore Shawn Jasper cooled a bit in the second round, but still managed to shoot 74 on the day and is in a tie for 19th at 143 for the tourney. Jasper got the Tigers off to a roaring start yesterday as he registered a one-under par 69. Fellow sophomore Trent Twaddle also had a solid Friday as he fired a five-over par 75 and is in a tie for 40th at 146 heading into tomorrow's final round. Chris Mabry (74-77=151, T-84) and Tyler Dunn (78-79=157, T-124) wrapped up the Tigers efforts on the day.
The Tigers will wrap up play in the Regional on Saturday. Live scoring will be provided at www.mutigers.com via www.golfstat.com and a complete recap of the action will be posted late tomorrow evening. For more information on Missouri Men's Golf, log on to www.mutigers.com.
