Columbia, Mo. - The University of Missouri Women's Golf team made its first appearance at the NCAA Championships on Tuesday finishing the opening day in a tie for 20th with a round of 307. The Tigers battled blustery conditions in Bend, OR, at the par-71, 6,312 Meadows Golf Course at the Sunriver Golf Resort. Mizzou is only seven strokes our of the top 10 and 15 strokes out of the top five following the first of four rounds over the next three days. USC took the opening round lead of the tourney with a round of 287.
"Our focus was really good today but we had a hard time knocking in putts," Head Coach Stephanie Cooper said. "We have a great opportunity to make a run over the next three days and hopefully and we come out ready to play tomorrow morning."
Senior Maria Ohlsson registered Mizzou's top individual performance with an opening round 76. Ohlsson finished the opening round in a tie for 57, just three strokes out of the top 25 and seven strokes behind opening-day leader Carolina Llano of Pepperdine who shot a 69.
Immediately behind Ohlsson were three of her Tiger teammates as freshman Madde Augustsson, senior Mindy Bullard and junior Kelli Strubinger all registered rounds of 77 on the day to finish in a tie for 74th after the opening round. Junior Denise Knaebel had a tough opening round as she shot 78 on the day to finish in a tie for 89th.
The Tigers open play in tomorrow's second round at 9:00 am (11:00 am CST) and will play with teams from Furman and California. Live scoring and a complete recap will be made available tomorrow at www.mutigers.com via www.golfstat.com.
