Columbia, MO - The University of Missouri Women's Golf squad was scheduled to play the first two rounds of the Susie Maxwell Berning Classic on Sunday ... and that almost happened. However, after completing the opening round in second place with a 298 behind Baylor, the Tigers managed only 17 of 18 scheduled holes in the second round before severe weather warnings suspended play for the rest of the day. The teams will take to the course with one hole to play in the second round and will complete the final round immediately proceeding the completion of the second round tomorrow at The Trails Golf Course (par 72, 6,017 yards) in Norman, OK .
"We really played pretty well today and kept our mental focus despite some challenging weather circumstances," Head Coach Stephanie Cooper said. "Tomorrow presents a big opportunity for us to finish well and build toward the Big 12 Championships."
Senior Mindy Bullard and sophomore Denise Knaebel highlighted the Tigers' opening round efforts as both shot rounds of 73, just one stroke out of the top spot in the tourney. Bullard was outstanding in the opening nine firing a two-under par 33. Kelli Strubinger, who had the shot of the day with a hole-in-one on the par-three sixth hole, is in a tie for 15th with an opening round 76. Strubinger used an eight iron on the 160-yard hole, good for the Tigers first ace of the season. Senior Maria Ohlsson also fired a 76 in the opening round and sophomore Stephanie Wavro capped Mizzou's efforts with a 78 in the first round, putting her in a tie for 27th.
The Tigers are scheduled to begin the final hole of the second round an 8:00 am with a shotgun start, complete the round and then be re-paired for the final round. Mizzou is in contention for its seventh top-three performance in nine tournaments so far this season and is in search of its fifth first place finish under Coach Cooper.
