No. 13 Tigers Lead Central District Classic after Opening Two Rounds

Feb. 21, 2005

Columbia, Mo. - The University of Missouri Women's Golf squad is off to a blazing start to the 2004-05 spring season at the Central District Invitational. The Tigers are on top of the leader board after the opening two rounds of the Invitational, which is being played at the River Wilderness Golf Club (Par 72, 6,099 yards) in Parrish, FL. Mizzou shot rounds of 292 and 295 to finish the day with a total of 587, two shots ahead of second-place Arkansas (589) and eight strokes ahead of third-place Baylor (595). No player on the Tiger roster shot worse than 76 in the first two rounds and all five competitors are in the top 25 heading into tomorrow's final round.

"I was extremely pleased with our consistency and our focus today," Head Coach Stephanie Cooper said. "We received contributions from all five players in our lineup today and we need to come back tomorrow and finish strong."

Sophomore Denise Knaebel and senior Maria Ohlsson find themselves in a seven-way tie for third after the opening two rounds with a total of 146. They each took different routes to that total as Knaebel was rock solid on the day shooting two rounds of one-over par 73. After struggling in the opening round with a 76, Ohlsson was on fire in Round 2, shooting a two-under par 70.

Probably the biggest surprise of the day was the play of Tiger sophomore Stephanie Wavro. She got the Tigers off to a great start playing in the No. 3 spot and shooting a career-best one-under par 71 in the opening round. She followed that effort up with a 76 to finish the day in a two-way tie for 10th with a total of 147. Right behind Wavro was junior Kelli Strubinger, who is in a tie for 12th. She opened the day with a 72 and then shot a 76 in the second round to finish with a total of 148. Senior Mindy Bullard was also extremely consistent on the day with two rounds of 76 to finish with a total of 152, just six strokes out of the top three and in a tie for 25th place after the first two rounds.

Mizzou goes in search of its fifth tournament title under Coach Cooper on Tuesday morning with an 8 am shotgun start. Live scoring will be provided at www.mutigers.com through www.golfstat.com. For more information on Mizzou Women's Golf, log on to www.mutigers.com.
