MU Wrestling Stays Alive with 25-13 Win Over North Carolina

Jan. 15, 2005

Hampton, Va. - After tweaking the 10-man lineup, the 12th ranked Missouri wrestling team held on to win its third dual in two days 25-13 over North Carolina at the 25th annual Virginia Duals in the Hampton Coliseum. The win gives the Tigers a 10-2 record and advances MU to a 3 p.m. (CT) dual against No. 19 Edinboro. Six Missouri wrestlers won their individual matches against the Tarheels, with senior Cody Greene (149) and sophomore Ben Askren both recording falls.

Greene (St. Charles, Mo.), ranked 16th in the nation at 149 pounds, bumped up a weight class to 157 pounds and pinned Kyle Shelton in 4:57. A low scoring match, Greene recorded an escape after being taken down by Atkinson 59 seconds into the bout. After giving up an escape to his ACC opponent, Greene retaliated by putting Shelton on his back for his fourth pin of the season.

Askren's (Hartland, Wis.) fall, his 16th of the season, came in 3:41 seconds after flattening Alex Maciag. Askren has 22 straight wins this season and is two shy from tying 1983 graduate Khris Whelan's Missouri consecutive wins record currently set at 24.

Scoring a takedown with 45 seconds left in the first period, 12th ranked Chris McCormick (Leawood, Kan.) put Missouri's first team points on the board with an 8-2 decision over Isaiah Britton. Racking up 1:39 of riding time, the junior held his Tarheel opponent scoreless through the first period of action, allowing only an escape in each of the second and third periods.

Down by one team point heading into the 165 pound bout, senior co-captain and eighth ranked Tyron Woodley (Ferguson, Mo.) came one step closer to joining the Missouri 100-win club with his 97th victory recorded in a 13-2 major decision over Garrett Atkinson. Woodley dominated Atkinson in the first period scoring eight points by three takedowns and a two-point nearfall.

Junior Jeff Foust (Blue Springs, Mo.) and sophomore Matt Pell (Luxemburg, Wis.) both kept their matches close. Pell, wrestling at 184 pounds, held on for a 4-1 victory over Justin Dobies while Foust earned a 3-1 decision against David Dashiell. Foust's win was the final MU victory of the dual and gave the Tigers a dominating 15 point lead over UNC.

Missouri's upcoming dual pits the Tigers against No. 19 Edinboro (6-2). The Fighting Scots are led by Head Coach Tim Flynn and hold three ranked wrestlers in their starting lineup, including No. 1 ranked Shawn Bunch at 133 pounds.

In the all-time record book, Missouri and Edinboro are locked up with one win a piece. In both outings against Edinboro, the final result has been a 21-15 score. The two teams last met during the 1995-96 season at the Virginia Duals, when then-MU Head Coach Wes Roper and his team held off the Fighting Scots for the 21-15 victory. Missouri's first dual with EU came during the 1993-94 season, when Edinboro won 21-15.
