Jones and Mayes March On to Junior National 800 Final

University of Missouri freshmen Marcus Mayes and Jimmie Jones advanced to the final of the 800-meter run at day one of the USA Track & Field Junior National Championships on Friday. Fellow track and field freshman Melanie Uher finished seventh in the women's discus.
Mayes (Sand Springs, Okla.) ran his preliminary in 1:52.32, finishing second in his heat. Jones (Oak Park, Mich.) got into the final with his time of 1:53.04.
"Jimmie ran a good race," said Jared Wilmes, Assistant Track and Field Coach. "Being in the first heat, no one wanted to lead the way with as windy as it was. Marcus came back from fifth in the final 150 meters to qualify for the final, and that was something good to see from him."
Melanie Uher (Wilber, Neb.) finished in seventh place in the discus, throwing for 147 feet (44.80m).
Tomorrow Mayes and Jones will run in the 800-meter final at 6:51 p.m., vying for a top two finish that will automatically qualify them for the IAAF World Junior Championships to be held in Grosseto, Italy. Sunday Bobby Musil will throw in the men's discus competition.
Also tomorrow, Tim Dunne, Eric Potter, and Neville Miller, will run at the Northern Iowa Last Chance Olympic Qualifier meet in Cedar Falls, Iowa. Dunne has already qualified for July's USATF Olympic Team Trials. Potter and Miller are looking to clinch a remaining spot. Tiger shot putter Conrad Woolsey will also participate in the meet, looking to improve upon his personal best of 62 feet, 5 inches (19.09m).
