The University of Missouri women's golf team finished in 13th place at the NCAA Central Regional after shooting a 310 in the final round. The Tigers shot a 936 for the tournament, and finished four spots out of the top eight, which would have guaranteed a spot in the NCAA Championships. While the season didn't end how they had hoped, head coach Stephanie Cooper said the Tigers have a lot to be proud of after a historic 2003-04 season.
"I am extremely proud of the way our team competed throughout this entire year," Cooper said. "These young ladies are a special group and it has truly been a pleasure coaching all of them."
Sophomore Kelli Strubinger played well throughout the tournament and was the Tigers' top individual finisher, shooting a 78 on the day and a 231 for the tournament. Fellow sophomore Denise Knaebel also made a solid appearance, finishing in 36th after firing a 78 on Saturday, finishing with a total of 233. The story of the final day for the Tigers was the play of Maria Ohlsson, who shot a team-best 74, going from a tie from 71 after the second round to a tie for 45th after the final round.
In what has been one of the best season's in school history, the Tigers finished in the top three in seven of the 11 tournaments they played in. Knaebel and Ohlsson were both named the All-Big 12 Team and five Tigers were named to the Academic All-Big 12 team. That success both on and off the course is a testament to the outstanding student athletes that are on the team, and all nine members of the team are back for the 2004-05 season.
