May 15, 2004

Box Score

LAWRENCE, Kan. -- - LAWRENCE, Kan. -- Missouri picked up its 30th win of the season with a 2-1 win over Kansas on Saturday night in Lawrence, Kan. The win by Mizzou (30-19-1, 9-13) combined with the loss by Kansas State on Saturday night clinched a spot in the Big 12 Tournament for the Tigers.

Junior RHP Garrett Broshuis remained unbeaten on the year, taking the victory to move to 8-0. He went 7.0 inning, allowing just one run on seven hits.

Senior Mark Alexander recorded his ninth saves of the season by pitching the final two innings, giving up just one hit an no runs. The nine saves put him second in the Mizzou record books for saves in a season. Ryan Stegall holds the record with 12 saves in 2000. Alexander, last week's Big 12 Pitcher of the Week, has not allowed a run in his last eight appearances and has four saves over that time.

The game was scoreless until the fourth inning when KU's Travis Metcalf doubled and would score on a single by Matt Tribble.

The Jayhawks (27-31-1, 3-19) had an opportunity to add to their lead, as they loaded the bases with no one out in the fifth. However, the Tigers got out of the inning without a run crossing the plate. Broshuis got two ground balls back to him, the first for a double play to end the inning without any damage done.

Mizzou scored both of its runs in the eighth inning. Senior Kyle Johnson, in the game as a pinch hitter, drew a walk and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore Trevor Helms. Johnson would then score on a single by sophomore Tyler Williams to tie game at one. Williams moved to third on a single by senior Lee Laskowski and scored on a sacrifice fly by senior Cody Ehlers.

Mizzou and Kansas will conclude the three-game series at 1 p.m on Sunday. That game, along with all Mizzou Baseball games, can be heard on the ZRG Radio Network (1580 KTGR in Columbia) with Tex Little and Luke Cassis providing the commentary. The broadcasts can also be heard online www.KTGR.com.
