Oklahoma City, Okla. - Junior Erin Kalka and senior Morgan LeCluyse were named to the first and second All-Big 12 Softball team respectively, as voted on by the coaches of the Big 12 Conference. Three Tigers (Samantha Fleeman, Joanne Loethen and LeCluyse) were selected for Academic All-Big 12 teams, announced Wednesday afternoon at the Big 12 Conference Softball banquet.
A total of 38 women were named to the first and second All-Big 12 teams (19 on each team). Both Kalka and Lecluyse were named to last seasons' 2003 second team. This is the first time Kalka has been selected for the first team.
Named the Big 12 pitcher of the week on April 6, Kalka (Chandler, Okla.) is one of three Missouri captains and has started in 34 of Missouri's games this season. Owning a 21-15 overall record (12-4 in the league), Kalka moved to third in the NCAA record book for her single game strikeout total of 25 in 14 innings against Oklahoma State on April 3. Fifth on the Missouri career strikeout chart (604), Kalka has tallied 265 strikeouts on the season and is third on the Missouri single season strikeout chart. Recording back-to-back shutouts in Kansas and then again against Baylor, Kalka holds six shutouts to her name this season, and was named to the second team All-Big 12 in 2003.
LeCluyse (Shawnee, Kan.) was named a member of the All-Big 12 second team for her performance in the outfield. A two-time honoree, LeCluyse is the lone senior on the Missouri team and holds 15 homeruns in her three-year career at Mizzou. Fifth on the Missouri career-homerun chart, LeCluyse currently leads the team with hits (38), total bases (59) and multiple RBI games on the season (six) and is tied for most doubles on the season at 10. One of three Tigers to start in all 49 of Missouri's games this season, LeCluyse also leads the team in RBI at 21.
Three Missouri softball players were named to the Academic All-Big 12 team. Sophomores Samantha Fleeman and Joanne Loethen were named to the first team, while LeCluyse was honored on the second team.
Nominated by each institution's director of student-athlete support services and the media relations offices, the softball academic all-league squad consists of 31 first team members combined with 17 on the second team.
