Men's Golf in 12th After First Day in Memphis

Oct. 4, 2004

CORDOVA, Tenn. - Consistent play from juniors Chris Mabry (Leawood, Kan. / Bishop Miege HS) and Ben Scott (Lancashire, United Kingdom / St. Theodore's HS) have the Tiger duo in the top third of golfers after the first day of play Monday at the Memphis Intercollegiate.

Mabry opened his day with a three-over-par 75 before closing with a 74 on the 6,991-yard layout at the Colonial Country Club. He stands in a tie for 28th place. Scott is one stroke back after firing matching 75s, and is tied for 34th.

The high scores were more the rule than the exception, as the field averaged a 76 in the first two rounds of play outside of Memphis.

As a team, Missouri is tied for 12th place out of 16 schools after shooting rounds of 17-over 305 and 304. The Tigers are 30 strokes behind Central Florida, but just a stroke behind Iowa for 11th.

"We're in a position where we can beat a bunch of teams if we play well tomorrow," Head Coach Mark Leroux said. "The players believe that we can do this and believe in themselves; we just need something to happen and need to figure out how to make that happen. Ben Scott and Chris Mabry played solid. It's beginning to be a common theme with those guys playing consistently. It is apparent to me that there are a couple of guys separating themselves on this team."

Among the Tigers' other three individuals, sophomore Shawn Jasper (Marthasville, Mo. / Francis Howell HS / Newman Univ.) is the highest placed in a tie for 51st following a season-best round of 74 and a 79; sophomore John Kelly (St. Louis, Mo. / Christian Brothers College HS) is in a tie for 74th (81-76); and senior Justin Bliss (Chesterfield, Mo. / Lafayette HS), making his first appearance of the season, is in 89th (82-83).

The tournament concludes Tuesday morning with 18 holes of play.
