Columbia, Mo. - University of Missouri senior women's golfer Maria Ohlsson continued to be a dominant force for the Tigers on Friday in the opening round of the Mason Rudolph Invitational. The native of Vetlanda, Sweden, shot 39 on the front and then registered a four-under par 32 on the back nine to finish the day in a tie for fourth, just one stroke off of the lead. Ohlsson is gunning for her third straight top 5 finish in as many tournaments and has fired sub-par rounds in three of the six rounds she has played this year.
While Ohlsson was outstanding on the day, the Tigers have some work to do over the course of the next two days if they want to extend their top-3 finishes streak to three straight tournaments. They are in 9th after shooting an opening-round 300, but are only four strokes out of the top five with two rounds left to play.
"We made some mistakes that were not characteristic of our team, but still managed to put together a pretty good score," Head Coach Stephanie Cooper said. "The course is in great shape and I think our best golf is ahead of us this weekend."
Juniors Kelli Strubinger and Denise Knaebel and freshman Madde Augustsson had solid opening rounds with Strubinger shooting 75 (T-30th) and Knaebel and Augustsson firing a pair of 77's (T-52). Senior Mindy Bullard rounded out the Tigers scoring on the day, shooting an 81.
With a cold front and a chance of showers in the weather forecast, the Tigers will take to the par-72, 6,254-yard Vanderbilt Legends Golf Club at 7:30 a.m., on Saturday for the second round. For more information on Missouri Women's Golf, log on www.mutigers.com.
