Tigers Take 2-0 Lead in Series With No. 1 Texas

COLUMBIA, Mo. -- - Mizzou shutout No. 1 Texas 8-0 on Saturday at Taylor Stadium to take a 2-0 lead in the series and will go for the sweep of the Longhorns on Sunday. Junior Garrett Broshuis remained undefeated on the season, allowing just four hits and striking out nine in 8.1 innings to move to 7-0 on the season.

The outing is the longest of the season for Broshuis and his nine strikeouts are a career high. He combined with senior Mark Alexander for the shutout. Alexander came in for the final two outs of the game, striking out both batters he faced.

Mizzou (27-16-1, 6-10) has shut out five of opponents this season and has shutouts in two of its last three games.

The Tigers got on the board early with a three-run first inning. Senior Cody Ehlers drove in the first run with a double to left. He leads team with 18 doubles on the year and moves into a tie for second on MU's all-time doubles list with 51 for he career.

Senior Lee Laskowski had RBI-singles in the fifth and the seventh innings and finished the day 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored.

Mizzou added two more runs in the bottom of the eighth, getting RBI singles from freshman Gary Arndt and sophomore Trevor Helms with two outs in the inning.

Helms and senior Jeremy Hernandez each had two hits on the day and seven different Tigers had an RBI in the game.

In the first two games of the weekend, MU pitchers have held the Longhorns to a just one run on 10 hits.

Texas (41-8, 13-6) has now lost two games in a row for the first time this season and are assured of losing its first Big 12 Conference series of the season.
