Norman, Okla. - The Missouri softball team suffered its first conference loss of the season in a 5-0 score to the No. 14/17 Oklahoma Sooners in Norman, Okla. Heading into game two of the doubleheader, the Tigers are 18-20 on the season and 5-1 in the Big 12 Conference.
Giving up nine hits on the game, it was the most the Tigers have allowed since the March 26, game against Texas State (9-3). The loss was Kalka's 12th of the season (14-12).
The Sooners jumped to an early third inning lead off of a homerun by catcher Heather Scaglione. Hitting a long ball over the left field fence, Scaglione's hit put two runs on the board as sophomore Kristin Vesely advanced from third. Missouri was never able to recover, only managing one hit in the fifth inning by freshman Kathy Masterson. The left-handed batter outran the throw after hitting the ball between the pitcher and third baseman.
Freshman pitcher Erica Peterson made her 26th appearance on the mound for Missouri, striking out OU's second baseman April Valdez for Missouri's second out in the final inning of action.
The loss by shutout was Missouri's first since dropping to No. 1 Arizona on March 14 (7-0) at Tempe.
Game two of the doubleheader is set to begin at 2:30 p.m. at the OU Softball Complex.
