Columbia, Mo.-The Missouri Tigers tasted some needed redemption by defeating Eastern Illinois in overtime tonight. After falling in a similar match against Mississippi in their previous game, the Tigers pulled through its second sudden death series on top with a 3-2 victory.
Leading the Tigers, Jennifer Nobis scored her fifth goal on the season to put Missouri on the board during the first period. After dominating the game offensively taking 14 shots, compared to Eastern Illinois' two, the Tigers were finally able to capitalize with just under four minutes in the half.
Junior Forward Shea Swoboda came through once more for Missouri dishing out her first assist on the year. Collecting a ball, she lofted a pass over the Panther defensive line to Nobis. After beating out EIU's stopper, she was able to take an unhindered one-on-one shot against goalkeeper Lindsay Dechert for the goal.
The Panthers picked up their offensive effort during the second period taking 12 shots against Mizzou. Pressuring Missouri, Eastern Illinois evened the contest scoring in the 84th minute to tie the match. Forward Beth Liesen captured a pass from Lindsay Holcomb to put EIU on the board and even out the game.
Fighting back with a record-setting play, forward Kristen Heil made history scoring Missouri's second goal just 11 seconds later. Taking the kickoff from Adriene Davis, Heil masterfully worked through the Panther squad, taking a shot from the top right corner of the box to scored unassisted. Her 11-second response is the quickest retaliation to an opponent goal in Mizzou history.
The Tigers excitement to Heil's feat was short lived however, as Eastern Illinois struck back to again tie the match on a goal by Liesen. Audra Fredricks dished out the assist setting up Liesen for the game-tying point that sent the contest into overtime.
Faced with the haunting memory of their loss to Mississippi, the Tigers opened the overtime period solidly taking two shots in the first two minutes of play. Mizzou's persistence paid off when Karen Bauer sent a cornerkick over the EIU box where Adriene Davis slammed in the game-winning header.
The victory takes Missouri to 5-2 on the year and drops Eastern Illinois to 3-3-1.
The Tigers travel to Gainsville, Fla., to take on the Florida Gators on Sunday at 1:00 p.m., EST.
