No. 25 Missouri falls to No. 25 Mississippi

Oxford, Miss.-Facing counterpart in the rankings, the #25 NSCAA toted Missouri soccer team battled the #25 Soccer Buzz backed Mississippi to a 2-1 overtime loss. The loss takes Missouri to a 4-2 record.

Mizzou was pressured early in the game with two Rebel corner kicks within the first five minutes of play. Goalkeeper Stephanie Krawczyk kept Mississippi at bay however making four saves in the first half, including a remarkable stop crushing a header by Rebel forward Amy Sample.

Gaining momentum as the first period progressed, Missouri turned up its attacking efforts to force three saves by Mississippi keeper Brittany Gillespie. Freshman Aria Hudetz and junior Shea Swoboda lead the Tigers' in attempts, each taking two shots in the first 45 minutes.

Sample remained a thorn in Mizzou's side during the second period putting in the game's first goal just 10 minutes into the half. A gap in the MU defense enabled Sample to break through and take an unassisted shot to score.

Despite the 1-0 deficit, Missouri was unrelenting in the spirited match. Forward Adriene Davis worked a ball sent in by Hudetz defeating her flanking defender to send a quick flick inside the box to Swoboda. The forward took her shot, but Gillespie was able to deflect the ball and force a Missouri corner kick.

Undeterred, Davis kept the Tiger energy gunning finally helping to put Mizzou on the board with just over ten minutes left to play. Sophomore Jennifer Nobis worked a ball from the midfield and lofted it over the Ole Miss defensive line where Davis beat out two defenders for possession. Following up her pass, Nobis edged up the right side of the field, received a return pass from Davis and scored the game-tying goal.

After a 2002 season where Missouri played an unprecedented seven overtime games, the 2003 Tigers went into their first sudden-death match strong. But were unable to pull out the victory as Mississippi's Kaela Kelly scored the game-winner in the 96th minute.
