Bloomington, Indiana. - The University of Missouri women's golf team has been on fire the past three tournaments. A fire would have been helpful for Mizzou today as they played the final round of the Indiana Invitational in blustery conditions with temperatures in the low 30's and wind chills in the 20's. Despite the brutal conditions, the Tigers continued to play well, finishing in second place with a final round of 314, giving them a three-round total of 928.
"Our kids showed unbelievable mental and physical toughness this weekend in some brutal conditions," head coach Stephanie Cooper said. "Overall, we were pretty consistent and did the things we needed to do to finish the tournament strong."
Mizzou was extremely impressive with five players ranking in the top 27 (out of 69) and two in the top 10 of the final standings. Sophomore Maria Ohlsson had an amazing outing, finishing fourth in the tourney. This was the best finish in her brief career at Mizzou and her three-round total of 227 was her best 54-hole total of the spring season. Maria's older sister Elin was equally as impressive, finishing in a tie for sixth place with a three-round total of 229. Maria was only five strokes off of the lead while Elin finished just seven strokes behind tournament champion Kim Benedict, who shot an even par 222 for the tourney.
Talented freshman and Moberly native Denise Knaebel continued her solid play, finishing in a tie for 23rd with rounds of 76, 82 and 82. She has finished in the top 25 in each of the last three tournaments and in the top 12 in two of the last three tourneys. Freshman Kelli Strubinger and sophomore Mandy Bullard finished right behind Knaebel in a tie for 27th place. After a strong opening day with rounds of 79 and 75 (T-10th), Strubinger had a tough final round with an 88 to round out the tournament. Bullard was very consistent with rounds of 79, 82 and 81 for the tournament. Freshman Stephanie Turner rounded out the Tigers' efforts with a 48th place finish and a three-round total of 251.
The Tigers now have just over two weeks to prepare for the Big 12 women's golf tournament, which they will host at the Country Club of Missouri on April 21-23. More information about the tourney will be sent out later this week. For more information on Tiger women's golf, log on to www.mutigers.com.
