Box Score
COLUMBIA, Mo. -
Junior DH Lee Laskowski (Clayton, Mo.) went 3-for-5 with two RBI and three runs scored, and Mizzou pitching allowed just one hit over the final six innings in rolling to a 14-8 win over Border War rival and No. 17-ranked Kansas on Saturday at Taylor Stadium/Simmons Field. It is the third straight win for the Tigers (15-8, 2-3 Big 12), who have now won six straight over the Jayhawks.
After KU (20-8, 0-2) got a run on a pair of hits in the first off Tiger sophomore starter Garrett Broshuis (Advance, Mo.), Mizzou batted around in the bottom half of the frame and scored seven runs on five hits, a Jayhawk error, two walks and a hit batsman off KU starter Josh Duran (2-2).
Senior CF Jayce Tingler (Smithville, Mo.) drew walks in his first three plate appearances, and had four total in the game, to score two runs for the Tiger cause. In all, Kansas walked eight batters, and four scored.
KU scored five runs in the third to pull within one at 7-6, yet the Tigers answered the bell again in the bottom half by scoring five of their own. Duran walked the bases loaded, and with two out, Laskowski hit a two-run single to right, junior C Brad Flanders (Smithville, Mo.) laced a double down the left-field line for two more runs, and junior 2B Jeremy Hernandez (Aptos, Calif.) hit a run-scoring single to right.
Broshuis (3-2) allowed just one hit in his final 3-2/3 innings, a fifth-inning solo homer to Ryan Baty, before yielding to freshman Nick Admire (Lebanon, Mo.). The righty got Kevin Wheeler to fly out to center on one pitch in the seventh before retiring six of the last seven batters of the game.
"We feel really good about the game today, and we get a chance to sweep the series tomorrow," said Head Coach Tim Jamieson. "We got a chance to swing the bats; we got some infield hits, and we had a lot of good at-bats, and for every inning that they scored except for one, we came right back and scored."
The Tigers and Jayhawks finish the series on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Taylor Stadium/Simmons Field. For ticket information, call 1-800-CAT-PAWS (573-884-PAWS in mid-Missouri).
