Columbia, Mo. - The Mizzou Tiger Tennis Team has jumped to 43rd in the recently released Intercollegiate National Rankings, making a huge jump from the previous rankings, which had MU 68th. This represents the highest national team ranking in program history.
"It's a number, that's all," said MU Coach Blake Starkey. "I'm not a big fan of ratings. Actually, ratings in general are over-rated, whether it's sports teams or movies. I've seen some great movies that the critics said were terrible. With our team, I'm more concerned with making sure we do the little things in practice, and making sure we fight as hard as we can on match day. Rankings are nice, but thinking that's what you are, or aren't, is ridiculous - you just have to work toward what is in front of you. We are are excited to be playing some great teams this year. This is a hungry team, and we are looking forward to our challenges."
The Tigers were scheduled to play Southeast Missouri State University today at the Green Tennis Center, but the opposing team could not travel due to heavy snow in Cape Girardeau. The match will be rescheduled for a later date. The Tigers will take on the 52nd-ranked Purdue Boilermakers this Sunday at the Green Tennis Center at 1:00 p.m. There will be ball kids during the doubles portion of the match, and tennis fans are encouraged to come and watch.
