Columbia, Mo. - The University of Missouri women's golf squad played a round for the ages on Monday. The team registered the lowest round of the tournament with an amazing 285, which is a school record for a team single-round total.
The Tigers finished the tourney with a team total of 889, equaling their lowest of the fall and putting them in third place in the tourney behind New Mexico and only two strokes behind second place Tennessee. The third place finish was the Tigers' fourth Top 5 finish in five tournaments played this fall. The run is especially impressive considering the fact that the Tigers shot a dismal 305 on Tuesday and were in eighth place following the first two round of the Shootout.
"We showed a lot of character and heart after a tough day yesterday," head coach Stephanie Cooper said. "Everyone on the squad picked up their game and made a contribution to the cause. Obviously you want to win every tourney you play in, but I think this was a good way to finish the fall and hopefully we can build on the momentum that has been established over the past five tournaments."
Junior Maria Ohlsson was brilliant in all three rounds finishing at one under par 215, the lowest 54-hole in school history and also a career low for the Swedish sensation. She was extremely consistent and jumped from fifth to second during the final round, finishing just two strokes behind New Mexico's Katrina Leckovic. Denise Knaebel was also on fire on Day 3, shooting a career-best round of 68 finishing in eighth place with a three-round total of 220. After back-to-back rounds of 75 to open the tourney, Knaebel was in 29th heading into the final round before moving up to eighth.
Junior Mindy Bullard also got in on the moving party in the final day. She was in 32nd place after the first two rounds (73-80), but bounced back in a major way on Wednesday firing a one-under par 71 to move into 18th with a three-round total of 224. Sophomore Kelli Strubinger had a solid day shooting a 75 in the final round finishing in 35th, up from 40th after the first two rounds.
The amazing effort wraps up the fall portion of the Tigers' schedule. For more information on the University of Missouri women's golf squad, log on to the home for Mizzou Athletics, www.mutigers.com
