Stockard In Lead After First Day of Junior National Heptathlon

PALO ALTO, Calif. - After Day One of the USA Track & Field Championships, Missouri freshman Jessica Stockard (Godfrey, Ill.) leads the Junior National heptathlon. Both the Junior and Senior nationals are being held on the campus of Stanford University in Palo Alto, Calif.

Stockard won the 200-meter dash and high jump and finished third in the shot put. Last week, Stockard finished 20th in the NCAA Championship heptathlon. Tomorrow, Stockard will compete in the long jump, javelin, and the 800-meter run in the final day of the junior national heptathlon.

Fellow heptathlete, Fiona Asigbee (Walford, Iowa) is in fifth place after the first day of the Senior National event. Asigbee finsihed second in the high jump portion of the competition after jumping 5 feet, 8.75 inches.

Senior Timothy Dunne (Jerome, Idaho) and Missouri track volunteer assistant Derrick Peterson both qualified for the semifinal round of the 800 meters. Tomorrow's semifinal will be late in the evening, 9 p.m. central time.

Tomorrow's action includes the conclusion of both the Junior and Senior National heptathlon, Dunne and Peterson's semifinal round of the 800 meters, and the Senior National shot put featuring Janae Strickland (Houston, Texas).
