COLUMBIA, Mo. - Tthe University of Missouri men and women's team had an impressive day on the first day of the Tom Botts Invitational at Wwalton Stadium today. Two Tigers, Senior Russ Bell and junior Holly Scherder set regional qualifying marks in the hammer throw. Bell has already set marks in the hammer throw, discus, and shot put.
Bell's throw of 194 feet, 10 inches set the qualifying mark and also gave Bell the hammer throw title. Bell's closest competition was more than 26 feet behind his mark. Scherder's throw of 174 feet, 9 inches set her first NCAA Regional Qualifying mark of the season and she also won the hammer throw title. Scherder defeated her closest competitor by 16 feet. Senior Amy Semith won the 3000 meter steeplechase in a time of 11:10.92 and former Tiger Michelle Moran leads the heptathlon after Day 1.
The Tom Botts Invitational concludes tomorrow with most of the events to come tommorow. Events begin at 11:30 a.m. tomorrow morning.
