Despite a final inning rally by the Mizzou softball team, the Tigers fell to No. 20 Texas A&M 4-2 on Saturday at University Field.
After three scoreless innings, the Aggies put the first runs on the board when Lindsay Wilhelmson hit a two-run homerun with two outs in the fourth inning. Texas A&M added two more runs in the seventh inning to take a 4-0 lead.
Heather Kunkel lead off the bottom of the seventh inning with her team leading seventh double of the year. The next batter, Rachael McGinnis then connected for a monster homerun which not only cleared the left field fence, but sailed over the scoreboard beyond the wall. The home run was her sixth of a year.
McGinnis finished 2-for-3 on the afternoon with two RBI. Morgan LeCluyse was also 2-for-3 and extended her hitting streak to 11 games.
Erin Kalka started in the circle for Mizzou and went 5 2/3 innings before Samantha Fleeman relieved her. Kalka gave up two runs on three hits, struck out six and walked one. She took the loss, falling to 11-7 on the season. Fleeman pitched the final 1 1/3 innings, giving up one hit and two runs, only one of which was earned.
Jessica Slataper picked up the win for the Aggies to move to 8-7 on the year. Wilhelmson entered in the seventh and picked up the save.
Texas A&M improves to 26-11 on the season and 4-1 in Big 12 play. The Tigers fall to 18-13, 3-2 in conference action. The two teams will wrap up the series at noon on Sunday.
