NORMAN, Okla.-- - First-year head coach Ty Singleton picked up his biggest win as Mizzou's head softball coach on Wednesday as his Tigers defeated the fourth ranked Oklahoma Sooners 2-0 in the first game of a doubleheader in Norman, Okla. Oklahoma responded 5-1 victory in game two.
Erin Kalka was the star for MU on the night as she pitched 12 innings in the two games. Kalka pitched a complete game shutout in the opener, giving up only three hits to the Sooners and striking out six. She then started game two, going five innings and giving up four runs.
The Tigers took their first lead in the fifth inning of game one, when Joanne Loethen doubled to drive in Kristen Burke and give Mizzou the 1-0 lead. Loethen finished 2-for-3 in the opener with the one RBI.
Missouri added an insurance run in the top of the seventh inning with the help of two errors by OU. With two outs, Ashley Hays hit a slow ground ball that appeared would be the third out, but the Oklahoma first baseman Christina Enea, lost the ball when she attempted to tag Hays. After the ball got away, the Sooner shortstop Kelli Braitasch gathered up the ball and attempted to throw Schellert out at third. Her throw, however, sailed over the third baseman's head, allowing Schellert to score.
The win for the Tigers was the first win over the Sooners since 1997, as Oklahoma had won the last eight meetings. It was also only the second loss of the season for the OU pitcher Kami Keiter.
The Tigers scored first in the second game as well when Morgan LeCluyse leadoff the second inning with her fourth homerun of the season.
Kalka again took the mound in game two and for four innings she continued to shutdown the OU batters, allowing just one run in the first four innings. However, in the fifth inning, Leah Gulla connected for a three-run homerun giving her team the 4-1 lead. The Sooners added a run in the sixth for the 5-1 final.
Kalka, who was relieved by Ingrid Werner in the sixth inning, is now 11-6 on the season. Heather Kunkel and Rachael McGinnis were each 2-for-3 in game two.
The Tigers are now 18-12 on the season and 3-1 in the Big 12 Conference. OU is 28-5 and 4-2 in conference play. Mizzou will return home this weekend for a two-game series with Texas A&M at University Field. Mizzou and the Aggies will face off at 2 p.m. on Saturday ant noon on Sunday.
