HOUSTON, Texas-- - The University of Missouri softball team won both of its games on day one of the Houston Classic on Saturday. Mizzou opened with a 3-2 win over the University of Houston and followed that with a 4-0 shutout of Boston.
The Tigers fell being early against Houston when Jenilee Skender hit a solo homerun to get the Cougars on the board first. Mizzou tied the game in the bottom of the fourth inning when a Heather Kunkel fielder's choice drove in Joanne Loethen. The game remained tied until the Cougars scored its second run of the game and retook the lead.
Mizzou responded in the bottom of the seventh inning, scoring two runs and taking the win. Morgan LeCluyse scored the first run of the inning when Jeni Schellert was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Ashley Hays then scored the winning run on a wild pitch by UH pitcher, Jamie Falco.
Loethen had two of the Tigers' three hits in the game, going 2-for-3 with one runs scored. Erin Kalka picked up her eighth victory of the season, as she pitched a complete game three hitter, striking out six and walking only one.
The Tigers started game two by scoring all four of the games' runs in the top of the first inning. Mizzou batted around in the inning, and got base hits from Sara Vassmer, Rachael McGinnis, LeCluyse and Schellert, with McGinnis and Schellert each picking up an RBI and LeCluyse two RBI.
Ingrid Werner improved to 3-0 on the year, recording her second shutout of the season on Saturday. She struck out five and allowed only three hits against the Terriers. Werner retired the first 12 BU batters before allowing the first base runner in the fifth inning.
McGinnis was 2-for-4 with one RBI and a run scored. Vassmer also finished 2-for-4 for MU with a run scored.
Missouri (14-10) will face the same two teams on Sunday as it takes on Boston at 10 a.m. and Houston at noon.
