STANFORD, Calif.-- - The Mizzou softball team had a rough day two of the Stanford Invitational. The Tigers opened play on Saturday by falling to No. 14 Stanford 5-2. Kentucky then knocked off Mizzou 4-0 its second game of the day.
Against Stanford, the Cardinal got on the board first with two runs in the second inning and then it added a third run in the following inning.
Mizzou cut the Cardinal lead to one in the fifth inning. Heather Kunkel doubled, stole third, and scored on a throwing error by the Stanford catcher to score the Tiger's first run. Rachael McGinnis scored MU's second run. After being hit by a pitch and stealing second, she was driven on a single by Jeni Schellert.
However, Stanford added two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning for the final margin of victory.
Erin Kalka started for the Tigers and took the loss. She gave up three runs, struck out one and walked two. Samantha Fleeman entered in the third inning, giving up just one earned run in four innings of work. She struck out two Stanford batters and did not walk a batter.
Sara Vassmer and Heather Kunkel were each 2-for-4 against the Cardinal. Both of Kunkel's hits were doubles. Rachael McGinnis was 1-for-2 with a double to increase her team lead in doubles to four.
Game two of the day for Mizzou against Kentucky took place under a light rain shower that continued throughout the game.
Kentucky did the early damage in the game, scoring four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. That was all the Wildcats would need as MU could only score one run in the sixth inning.
Joanne Loethen was two-for-three and drove in the Tigers lone run. Morgan LeCluyse, Kristen Burke and Schellert each had one hit for Missouri.
Kalka took her second loss of the day, falling to 3-3 on the year. Other than the four-run fourth inning by UK, Kalka was in dominate. She struck out 10 and walked three in the game.
The Tigers are now 5-4 on the season. They will conclude play in Stanford Invitational at 10 a.m. (noon CST) on Sunday against Penn State, which Mizzou defeated 3-1 on Friday.
