Tiger Softball Advances to Auburn Invitational Championship Game

AUBRUN, Ala.-- The University of Missouri softball team defeated Auburn and Chattanooga on Saturday to advance to the championship game of the Auburn Invitational in Auburn, Ala. The Tigers are now 4-0 on the season.

In its first game of the day, Mizzou defeated the host team, Auburn 8-3. The Tigers built their lead with a six-run sixth inning highlighted by doubles from Heather Kunkel, Rachael McGinnis and Daisy Mettlach.

Erin Kalka picked up the win for Mizzou, her second of the weekend. She had a no-hitter trough five innings and finished with a complete game four hitter. Kalka gave up three runs, while striking out nine and walking three.

Mettlach was 3-for-4 for the Tigers with three RBI. Kunkel and McGinnis each recorded two hits and each had one RBI against Auburn. Sara Vassmer, Jeni Schellert and Kendra Power each added an RBI for MU.

The Tigers then faced Chattanooga and defeated the Lady Mocs for the second time in two days. After a 7-0 victory over UTC on Friday, Mizzou again held the Lady Mocs scoreless, recording a 4-0 win on Saturday.

Samantha Fleeman picked up the complete game shutout. She gave up only four hits, walked none and struck out six.

Kunkel provided the biggest shot of the day, as she crushed a two-run homerun that not only cleared the left field fence, but also sailed over the scoreboard above the wall.

McGinnis was 2-for-4 and has recorded two hits in each of the Tigers first four games, with five of those hits going for extra bases.

In the championship game on Sunday, Missouri will again take on Auburn at 1:30 p.m. The game can be heard on www.auburntigers.com. Live stats of the game will also be available on that web site.

Chattanooga will face Mercer in the consolation game of the tournament at 11 a.m.
