The University of Missouri men's swimming team suffered a setback at their training tri-meet in Tempe, Arizona. The men's team lost both duals, falling to 12th-ranked Arizona State, 212-67 and Wyoming, 143-136. The men's team fall to 3-4 in duals this season.
The men's team, swimming without senior Radu Miclaus, only had one first place finisher against Arizona State. Senior Matt Ferrarelli won the 200 individual medley with a time of 1:53.02. Ferrarelli finished third in both the 100 (51.60) and 200 (1:50.74) backstrokes.
Matt North finished second in the 100 breaststroke (57.83) and fourth in the 200 breaststroke (2:07.35). Tyler Belanger finished second in both the 50 (21.14) and 100 (47.38) freestyles. Senior Dane Pedersen finished fourth in the 500 freestyle (4:44.84).
The men's 400 freestyle relay team finished second. The team of Chris Lukas, Ryan Searby, Chris Musfeldt and Belanger finished with a time of 3:08.60.
"I'm very pleased with both of the team's performances," said Hoffer. "We performed very well and now we will continue to use this training period to build on what we need to improve on for the second half of the season."
The teams will remain in Tempe to continue training before heading back to Columbia on January 11. Both teams open the second half of the season with a home dual meet against in-state rival Southwest Missouri State on January 18 at the University Natatorium, the start time is 2:00 pm.
NOTES FROM THE DECK: Both men's and women's teams competed without the diving team, who are training at the St. Louis Rec Plex during the break...Wyoming and Arizona State had their divers at the meet and competed.
