Tallahassee, Fla.-After three consecutive games extending into double-overtime, the Missouri Tigers were determined to keep their fourth game of the 2002 season under regulation. Although it was a rough battle to their first regulation victory, the Tigers pulled through with a 1-0 win over No. 23 ranked Miami to bring their season mark to 2-1-1.
Missouri put the game's only goal on the board in just the 12th minute of play scoring a penalty kick. Freshman Amber Swinehart was brought down inside the Miami box by a Hurricane defender earning Mizzou a penalty kick. PK expert Karen Bauer stepped in to take Missouri's shot and successfully launched a goal into the bottom right corner of the 'Cane net.
Miami retaliated hard taking back-to-back shots at the Mizzou goal, but Tiger keeper Megan Duncan earned two saves to keep Missouri on top. The onslaught continued throughout the remainder of the first half as Miami took 16 shots and forced nine saves by Duncan. The Tiger defensive squad also worked overtime causing the majority of Miami's shots to be taken from the midfield.
The heat continued for the Tigers throughout the second half. Miami hit the Mizzou defensive line throttling Duncan with 10 more shots. With 12 minutes remaining in the half, the Hurricane's efforts seemed to have paid off when a pass/flick combo crossed the MU goal line while Duncan seemed disoriented. The goal was called unofficial however as Miami was offside and Duncan's disorientation earned a foul call resulting from a blow to the face sustained during the quickness of the play.
Despite the setback, Missouri was able to hold onto the victory defending 26 Hurricane shots, including 11 saves by Duncan, in the 90-minute match. Although Missouri was kept to just 10 shots in the game, the Tigers recorded five shots on goal, including two-of-four by forward Missy Peabody.
Following a tough weekend against ranked opponents, the Tigers take their 2-1-1 record on the road for the second straight week as they head to the Ohio State Invitational Sept. 13-15, where they will face OSU and Bowling Green State.
